Environmental Factors of the iPhone

Apple is the electronics corporation behind the popular iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 devices. As their manufacturer, Apple is responsible for the environmental impact these devices leave in the world. Apple utilizes several techniques to manage the environment such as using recyclable material, restricting harmful chemicals and improving energy efficiency in peripheral equipment.

Packaging

  • The packaging provided for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS is almost entirely recyclable. The retail box is manufactured from bio-based material, including 90 percent post-consumer recycled fiberboard. The iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS's retail packaging is also up to 42% lighter than the previous generations.

Energy Efficiency

  • The iPhone 4 and 3GS utilizes power efficient software and components. Apple's iPhone USB adapter outperforms the Energy Star qualifications for external power supplies. The Apple USB power adapter has an efficiency up to 75 percent as well.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions

  • According to Apple, the majority of their corporate greenhouse gas emissions derives from the transportation, production, use and recycling of their own products, including the iPhone. Apple minimizes their greenhouse emissions by setting stringent design-related goals for material and energy efficiency. Over the life cycle of iPhone devices, about 50 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions come from customer use. Over 40 percent occurs during production, while the rest is caused during transport and recycling.

Restricted Substances

  • Apple attempts to restrict harmful substances from the iPhone devices and their packaging. All iPhones comply with the European RoHS Directive (Restriction of Hazardous Substances). Harmful materials including lead, mercury, cadmium, and brominated flame retardants are restricted by Apple. All iPhone devices use a mercury-free LCD display, bromine-free printed circuit boards, arsenic free glass and PVC-free headphones and USB cables.
